School of Philosophy, Fudan University

Supported by the Graduate School of Fudan University and hosted by School of Philosophy at Fudan University, Fudan International Summer School of Philosophy 2026 will take place from August 2nd to August 12th at Fudan University. The theme of this year’s summer school is “History and Emotions in Chinese Philosophy”. Different from mainstream Western philosophy, history rather than some metaphysical entity often plays normative roles in Chinese philosophy; emotions rather than reason are also central to Chinese philosophy. The instructors for this summer school are leading figures in the field of Chinese philosophy from around the world. They will explore, from different schools and different periods of Chinese philosophy, the intricate relationships between emotions, history, and normativity. By re-examining the characteristics of Chinese philosophy from the perspectives of history and emotions, this program aims to show the contemporary significance of Chinese philosophy in comparison with Western philosophy. All courses in this Summer School will be conducted in English.

Hagop Sarkissian (沙启善) is a Professor in the Department of Philosophy at Baruch College, the City University of New York (CUNY), and a Professor of Philosophy and Faculty Affiliate in Cognitive Science at the CUNY Graduate Center. His research focuses on metaethics, agency, and moral psychology. In essence, he explores the nature and status of social and moral norms, as well as the various factors that shape human normative cognition and behavior. Many of his research projects—especially his views on selfhood, agency, and the nature of morality—are inspired by claims or arguments found in classical Chinese philosophical texts. His recent research focuses on thinkers in the Korean tradition, particularly key figures involved in the "Four-Seven Debate" of the 16th to 18th centuries.

Michael D. Ing(吴荣桂) Professor

Michael D. Ing (吴荣桂) is a Professor of Religious Studies at Indiana University Bloomington. His research primarily focuses on discourses concerning the human condition in early and medieval China as well as traditional Hawaiian culture, with a particular interest in themes of vulnerability and resilience, and how relationships are constructed between humans and the world, as well as among humans themselves. His first book, The Dysfunction of Ritual in Early Confucianism (Oxford University Press, 2012), takes the Liji (Book of Rites) as its subject to analyze how its authors grappled with the predicament of ritual failing to achieve order. His second book, The Vulnerability of Integrity in Early Confucianism (Oxford University Press, 2017), explores the inevitability and value of vulnerability within the human experience. He currently has two research projects: the first focuses on themes of mourning and resilience in the works of the Chinese poet and literatus Tao Yuanming, examining how Tao navigated loss and discontent after his resignation from office through the study of grief and mourning; the second is a study concerning traditional Hawaiian thought.
